Diet Tips August 12th, 2010
DIET more useful high carbohydrate increase exercise capacity in people with McArdle disease than high-protein diet. Reported a small-scale study published in the journal Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Psychiatry.
McArdle is a metabolic disease of muscle. People who are born with this condition are not able to produce an enzyme called muscle phosphorylase. In fact, this enzyme plays an important role in producing the necessary energy source muscles during exercise (exercise) or exercise. McArdle patients usually experience pain in some locations and muscle fatigue (fatigue) at the beginning of their exercise. If continued, could arise stiff or muscle spasms. Well, two smaller-scale studies found a bright spot that high dietary carbohydrate and protein may be beneficial for patients with McArdle disease.
Participants consisted of seven patients who randomly McArdle asked to choose one of these diets (high-carbohydrate diets or high protein) and run it for three days. Undergo after each diet, participants then conduct training activities with the bike.
The result, researchers found that participants who do high-carbohydrate diet are able to do activities with better training than the participants that high-protein diet. One of the indicators can be seen from the heart rate lower (not gasping) and oxygen 25 per cent higher in participants who are high-carbohydrate diet than those who were high-protein diet.

Research and Technology-Kalbe Science Awards Back
Health News August 12th, 2010
JAKARTA, – Ministry of Research and Technology (Research and Technology) and PT Kalbe Farma for Research and Technology held a second time-Kalbe Science Awards (RKSA), an event that will reward the best researchers in Indonesia in the areas of health, especially related to life science and technology.
RSKA, first held in 2008 and, this year will again give credit to the two categories, namely categories of young researchers and the best research. Category Young Scientist Awards will be given young researchers who assessed achievement for their work in conducting various studies and have a positive impact in the field of life science and health related technology.
While Best Research Awards will be given for the best results in the areas of research that determined that providing a positive influence in the field of life science and related technology and health.
Boenjamin Dr. Setiawan, PhD, founder and senior advisor of PT Kalbe Farma, said, RSKA event is an effort to give respect and appreciation for the hard work and great work produced by Indonesian researchers.
He considered gait researchers in Indonesia is still less appreciated, even though they should more attention. “The commitment of scientists and research work that they produce in various fields is an important part of the progress of the nation. Researchers should get the award so that it can live properly,” Dr Boenjamin.
Last year, the winner of Young Scientist RSKA category was captured by Dr. Heni Rachmawati, while the three winners of the category Best Research granted to Dr Sunu Budhi Raharjo, PhD, Professor Maggy Thenawidjaja Suhartono, and Khie khiong, SSi, MPharm MSc, PhD.

Learning Therapy Treatment of the Locusts

LONDON – Humans and insects have similarities in terms of brain disorder that causes migraine disease, stroke and epilepsy. Therefore, the scientists used this similarity to analyze the grasshopper as a guide to finding a suitable drug therapies for these diseases.
A biologist at Queen’s University found that these health problems associated with brain dysfunction that results from the closure of nerve cells. Such information is quoted from Machine Like Us, Saturday (4/7/2009).
Apparently, it is also felt by the locusts when they fell into a coma after exposure to weather conditions such as extreme heat and lack of oxygen.
Insects have the unique ability to survive at the time of entering a coma. Direct them immediately to recover independently. This method works like a drug that leads directly to one of the target cells causing pain.
“This is what we were developing. We imitate what they do grasshoppers and apply this method for the treatment of migraine, stroke and epilepsy in humans,” said one scientist in this study, Gary Armstrong.
“What makes me really wonder is, locusts have the ability to suppress pain attacks and minimize the impact of brain disorders by 70 percent,” he added.
The results of this study showed that the grasshopper in a coma in an effort to rest a moment and collect the energy in the body condition was critical. Response of brain cells that occurs in these locusts similar to those in humans when experiencing a migraine
Onions Prevent Heart Disease
Disease August 12th, 2010
Recently a study says garlic can reduce heart disease. Research conducted by a team of the Institute of Food Research have found an important compound in garlic that enhances the body antibodies. The compound is quercetin. Substance is also found in tea leaves, apples, and red wine.
As reported by the BBC, Sunday (4/11/2007), Atherosclerosis studies have found effects of quercetin compounds that produce the body. It helps prevent onion chronic inflammation caused by narrowing of the arteries.
The study was led by Dr Paul Kroon of the Institute of Food Research. In these studies show that quercetin is an important compound that accelerates the metabolism of intestine and liver. And compounds not found in the blood.
“We have tested the substance and put into the blood. As a result, this substance is very influential on the health of the arteries,” said Dr Paul Kroon.
The study proved that people who rarely eat garlic will be more likely to have a heart attack on the consumption of 100 to 200 grams per day.
The discovery is also supported by Bridget Aisbitt, a nutrition expert at the British Nutrition Foundation.
“In the United Kingdom we only consume an average of two servings of fruits and vegetables every day. And this research is very important for us to consume more than five times each day to maintain our health,” says Aisbitt.
